Harian LA Times melakukan sedikit investigasi untuk menelusuri sejarah SMS 160 karakter dan akhirnya berhasil menemukan orang yang paling bertanggung jawab: Friedhelm Hillebrand. Pria Jerman malang ini memang tak menjadi kaya karena mengembangkan standar SMS tapi ia adalah orang yang berada di balik pembatasan itu.Pada tahun 1985 ia duduk di depan mesin tiknya dan berusaha menyelidiki panjang maksimal sebuah text message. Ia menulis beberapa kalimat dan menemukan bahwa ia selalu menggunakan karakter di bawah 160. Ia kemudian menetapkan angka 160 sebagai angka ajaibnya dan memaksakan standar baru pada semua GSM carrier. Ia bisa melakukannya karena jabatannya sebagai pimpinan dari nonvoice services committee of the Global System for Mobile Communications Group pada 1986. Memang kisah ini sudah bergulir puluhan tahun silam, tapi gaungnya masih terasa sampai sekarang.
Hari ini kita masih terjebak dengan pembatasan 160 karakter yang “Ajaib” itu dan terus menerus mencari cara baru untuk mengkombinasikan dan menyingkat kata-kata agar kita bisa beradaptasi dengan pembatasan itu.
